- Mary C. "May" Green, of Thomaston, formerly of Newburgh, NY passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Knox Skilled Nursing. She was 84. She was the daughter of the late Isaac and Margaret Cowan Gibson, born on May 14, 1924 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was married to the late Alexander "Scotty" Green.
Mary was a retired supervisor for Albany Savings Bank's Meadow Hill branch in Newburgh. She was a member of Union Presbyterian Church, the Golden Age Club, Town of Newburgh Recreation Center, the Daughters of Scotia #74. In Maine she attended the Rockland Congregational Church. She was a very active member of both Rockland and Union Senior Citizens, the Red Hat Society and the Port Clyde exercise group known as the Port Clyde Rocketts.
After retiring from Albany Savings Bank and the passing of husband Alexander, she eventually moved to Mid Coast Maine with son James and his family, living first in Tenants Harbor and finally in Thomaston. It didn't take long for her to build a large group of friends and endear herself to the communities she lived in; always willing to give a helping hand and serve the church she attended.
Mary was known to her friends and family as "May", and was always regarded by others as vibrant, gracious, dignified and delightful. She crafted many knit and crochet items with her "Knit Wits" group of the Rockland Senior Citizens who in turn donated the items to local hospitals, nursing homes, charitable organizations and our troops. Occasionally she would knit special items for friends who wanted to give a treasured gift. She was active with special projects that both the Rockland and Union Senior Groups worked on and took many Senior Trips sponsored by them. She loved to travel and see new places. She is survived by her loving son, James A. Green of Thomaston; grandchildren, Sgt. Alexander Green, USMC of New Bern, NC, Amanda Cox and her husband Jeremy of Calhoun, GA and Patricia Gano and her husband Eric of Columbus, GA; great-grandchildren, Quinn and Alex Dakota; and several nieces and nephews in Scotland. She will also be sadly missed by her special friend Jean and former daughter-in-law, Deborah.
She was also predeceased by her sisters, Sadie McInally and Margaret Laidlaw in Scotland.
