Miller - Master Milling Co. |
- The best-known and longest-lasting Berlin flour mill began in April 1878 when town council granted a five-year tax exemption allowing Lawrence Doering of Linwood to erect a steam-powered grist mill on Queen South beside the Grand Trunk Railway tracks. The three-storey frame of the $12,000 mill was erected in one day by a 100-worker construction bee on June 27. Two years later, brickyard owner John Bramm purchased the business for $7,000 and under his sons John Jr. and George, the renamed Berlin Roller Mill was enlarged and it prospered for 27 years. Taking over in 1907 was Irvine Master, son of longtime MPP Isaac Master. He had moved to Berlin from his Plattsville milling operation and installed a 65-horsepower direct-current motor to run modern rolling and sifting equipment. Master's City Flour Mill became well-known for its "King," "Banner," "Graham" and "Master's Best" flours while also producing custom feed and grindings. Ralph Koch took over in 1939 but sold to Fred Kissner Sr. in 1943. His sons, Fred Jr. and Del, oversaw Kissner Milling until it departed 600 Queen S. in 1985. - Waterloo Region Record 22 Feb 2019
