- Of Camrose passed away in her one hundredth year at the University Hospital. The elder daughter of the late Harold and Mary Deeton, Helen was predeceased by her husband Charlie in 1972, her brothers Harold in 1916, Gordon in 1990 and sister Catherine in 2006. Loving mother of Charles (Cecile) of Lethbridge, Pat (Garry) Meadus of Edmonton, Cathy (Tom) Dobbie of Camrose, and Ruth McCleary of Winnipeg. Grandmother of David and Raymond McCleary, Scott and Michael Meadus, James and Patrick Dobbie and seven great-grandchildren: Dylan, Megan, Kirsten, Savannah, Kaleigh, Alanna, and AJ. Helen was born in Edmonton and following high school attended Camrose Normal School where she met Charlie. In 1928 she taught in a one room school near Irma and then in Edmonton for five years. She married Charlie in 1935 and moved to Camrose. In 1958, Helen joined the staff at Camrose High School, teaching math and English literature. A life long learner, Helen received her BA from the University of Alberta in 1964. With the closure of Camrose High School, she transferred to the Camrose Composite High School and taught full time until retirement in 1973. Helen was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star, the Camrose United Church congregation and choir, and the Camrose Historical Society. An avid reader, bridge player and world traveler with a strong avidity for the British Isles, Helen ensured each of her children accompanied her on at least one of her holidays to Britain. While growing up in Edmonton, Helen spent wonderful summers at her family's cottage at Seba Beach, a cottage that became the beloved summer home of her children and nieces and nephews. In 1970, Helen and Charlie built their own cottage at Hardisty Lake where Helen enjoyed her summers until 2005. Helen was kind and generous to her family and community. She lived a long and satisfying life, sharing her stories and memories with her loved ones to the end. Helen's family wishes to thank the extended care givers who helped Mom through the last years of her life. Helen's funeral will be held at the Camrose United Church (4829 - 50 Street) on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m with Mary Ann Pastuk officiating and Reverend Stephen Haughland assisting. Interment will follow in the Camrose Cemetery. Helen McCleary (nee Deeton) passed away in her ninety-ninth year on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the U of A Hospital, Edmonton. Helen was born in Edmonton in 1910, the elder daughter of Mary and Harold Deeton. Her beloved husband Charlie, brothers Harold, Gordon and her sister Catherine predeceased her. Loving mother to son Charles (Cecile) and daughters Pat (Garry) Meadus, Cathy (Tom) Dobbie and Ruth McCleary.
Grandmother to David (Wendy) McCleary, Raymond (Andrea) McCleary, Scott (Trish) Meadus, Michael (Andrea) Meadus, James (Debi) Dobbie, Patrick Dobbie and seven great-grandchildren. She was a kind and generous person to many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Helen's funeral was held at the Camrose United Church (4829 50 Street) on Saturday October 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Mary Ann Pastuk officiating. Interment followed in The Camrose Cemetery.
